My parents subscribe to their Ohio hometown newspaper, The Ripley Bee, and when they are finished reading it, they pass it on to me. Even though I only lived there for a short while when I was a baby and then again during the year my father was in Vietnam, I enjoy reading the paper. Every once in a while I even find an obituary or other piece of small town news that helps me with my family history research.
One of my most favorite parts of the weekly newspaper is the It Happened 20 Years Ago and 75 Years Ago sections. I love reading the little tidbits of news that were published back then and sometimes recognize names of family, friends, or ancestors in the selections. I do wish there were more selections involving the long ago citizens of Ripley rather then the editorial or political remembrances that are often chosen, but it still is fun to read about the past and what was happening during those times.
This morning, I was reading the July 22, 2010 issue of The Ripley Bee and found one It Happened 75 Years Ago selection a little amusing and thought I would share it.
From July 18, 1935 - "Judge A.G. Sulser in Maysville (Kentucky) sentenced Robert Grayson, 11, to consume castor oil after the juvenile deliberately scattered tacks on the road."
Maybe we, here in 2010, should try castor oil when our juveniles get in trouble. It just might deter some of them!
